Do LaB: Thank you for taking the time to answer some of our’s and your fans questions. Let’s start by having you fill us in on all the latest news with you, your music and your other projects. 

MartyParty: “Hi guys! I’ve got tons going on… either as either MartyParty or with Ooah as PANTyRAiD. Just wrapping up a West Coast tour with the last show with you guys in LA at King King. About to drop the second PANTyRAiD album May 28th, been releasing tons of new mix tapes (Purple Sweat) loaded with new MartyParty sketches, and remixes galore. It’s been an exciting Spring.” 

Do LaB: You recently released your Purple Sweat mix. Tell us about what the Purple vibe means to you. 

MartyParty: “Bassline hip hop – emotional progressive synthesized club music, to be technical – haha Purple is my baby. It is the music I love…. synthetic hip hop. It’s any tempo really, usually around 75 and 90 bpm. I just sat down with a few days here and there last month and wanted to craft a new mix tape that represented the Purple vibes of my current studio adventures. My sets change tempo – and my production changes tempo, so I wanted to start with a Purple tune at 65 and end at a tune at 93. The listener may not even notice the tempo changes – but will feel the energy rise and emotions unravel. That’s the Purple Sweat.”

Cameron Lynch asked: How do you see music? Is it a feeling, a memory? What makes a tune ‘right?’

MartyParty: “Tuning is something you just learn with enough practice. Once you know what is in tune – you can tell when a tune is right. Same with beat and rhythm. You just learn what the song should sound like, based on your liking, and which layers work where to manipulate the mixed sounds to be reproduced perfectly without distortion. Its a science wrapped in an art. Each session or effort is driven by an emotion, you want to say something, it can be gentle or rough, but it is an intention. Once you find one sound you like that fits your intention, the rest unravels very fast, and then you spend a few days fine tuning and arranging the parts so that it makes sense and takes the listener on the correct journey.”

Do LaB: You are also about to release a new album with Ooah, as PANTyRAiD. How is your process different when creating music as MartyParty vs material with Ooah as PANTyRAiD? Also, can we expect to hear some new PANTyRAiD jams at Friday’s show?

MartyParty: “Of course! I’ll play all the music I’m currently involved with. Expect everything to be fresh – that’s how I roll. And yes, making music alone and with Josh has a different process, but it is equally stimulating and special. I’m very blessed to be able to do both projects and bring lessons and experimentation from one project to the other and vice versa. MartyParty tends to be more experimental, PANTyRAiD tends toward a legacy style Ooah and I started years ago. But all the songs I work on in all my projects always have that same sexy emotional club happy energy. It’s just my taste. And Ooah and I share very similar tastes – so it works very well.”

Viktor Phoenix asked: What’s your philosophy for recreating your studio sound in a live setting?

MartyParty: “I have a cool Ableton set layout which allows me to layer many effects, one shots, acapellas, sounds and things over each other in a live environment. The result is a very rich and dynamic experience for the listener – always different and always changing. This is pretty much how I write in the studio… constant experimentation.”

Do LaB: What are your thoughts on playing Friday’s show with Noah D and Trill Murray as well returning to Los Angeles? 

MartyParty: “Looking forward to the show. I love the Do LaB like family and love their crowd. We all go back. The line-up is awesome. Always enjoy playing with other producers to make the night perfect from the time doors open to the time they close. This is gonna be awesome! Do LaB: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview with us. Let’s start by having you fill us in on all the latest news with you and your music. 

Noah D: “I’ve been exploring some new directions this year for solo work as well as the possibility of starting some new projects so I’ve been kinda hiding out in the studio and keeping a low profile. Keeping most of the details on the low low for now but you can occasionally catch a few seconds of new ideas on Vine @noahdmusic.”

Do LaB: Tell us about your recent release on Smog, the “Fire Alarm” EP.

Noah D: “Fire Alarm was a fun one for me. I was able to keep it diverse and driving with tunes that can work inside and outside of the club which is something I’m often striving for. It also shows me continuing with a more stripped down aesthetic with lots of analogue influence, all characteristics I’m still exploring with my newest work as well.”

 
Do LaB: Who have been some of your biggest inspirations over the years?

Noah D: “People who make music with soul and power.”
 
Do LaB: Tell us about making the move from SF to LA, as well as joining forces with the Smog crew. 

Noah D: “I grew up in San Jose, CA until I was about 21 years old then lived in Portland, OR for 10 years. Around 2010 I was feeling the need to get back to a bigger city and the opportunity to move in with some friends in SF arose right at the end of 2011. I had a good year in SF and I think the bay will always be my ultimate home but right now it just made more sense for me to be in LA. I made the move in the first days of 2013 and I have been loving it so far.”
 
“Joining forces with the Smog crew first started to materialize when I was working on my debut album “Perspective” in 2011. I wanted the LP to be released on a US label and Drew Best (Smog’s head honcho) was really supportive of me and the album so it just went from there. It’s a family affair with Smog. Most of us in the crew have known each other for years, I really like that vibe. I’m also really excited for Smog’s future. All the artists on the label and the crew behind the scenes are putting in a lot of hard work.”

 
Do LaB: This will be your debut Do LaB show. What can our fans expect from your live performance? 

Noah D: “Varying types of beats with heavy sub bass, hard knocking drums and lots of hypnotic, catchy melodies. There’s usually elements of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Drum N Bass, Dubstep, Trap, Grime and Dancehall. Urban Soundtracks if you will. As a DJ I keep most of my set unplanned and try to tap into the energy of the room and I really try to make my set be something the crowd will remember.”
 
Do LaB: What are your thoughts on performing with MartyParty and Trill Murray this Friday? 

Noah D: “I’ve played a few times with Marty and he always puts on a good show and he’s been killing it lately so I know it’s gonna be a crazy night. I’ve yet to play with Trill Murray but I know he’s got good buzz right now so I’m looking forward to hearing what he’s got in store for us!”

G JONES

Weaving bubbling beats and spacey melodies seamlessly into layers of assshaking low end, Santa Cruz producer, Greg Jones aka G Jones is rapidly rising through the ranks of the electronic music world. G Jones has taken audiences from all over the west coast on a ride with him through his fresh, genre-bending take on bass music. Drawing heavy influence from hip hop and West Coast bass music, the budding young producer recently released his debut EP “Mirage” on Germany’s Saturate! Records, gaining widespread support from the electronic music community and leaving listeners craving more. The future is bright for G Jones, with several new releases planned, and plenty of new dancefloors and festivals to crush in 2013.

GREAT DANE

23 year-old Dane Morris is Great Dane, a drifter from Orange County with a taste for independent hip hop and an ear for sticky beats. A Low End Theory enthusiast who is newly signed to Alpha Pup Records, Great Dane is highly influenced by the D-I-Y aesthetic espoused by groups such as Odd Future, and is co-founder of beat collective TeamSupreme. Great Dane’s debut LP Alpha Dog was released on March 12, 2013.

Do LaB: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview with us. Let’s start by having you fill is in on some of the latest news about you and your music. 

Kill Paris: “I’ve been playing shows all over the country and working on my next release with OWSLA.” 

Steph Anie asks: How has hooking up with OWSLA changed your career trajectory?

Kill Paris: “It’s definitely given me a big push in alot of ways. It has allowed me just be myself and do my thing. I equate being on OWSLA to what it must be like to be on the NBA All Star Team. Everyone on OWSLA is just so awesome and unique in their own way. It’s an honor to be a part of the group.” 

Do LaB: For fans who may just be discovering your music, can you tell us about how you got involved with music and how you’ve defined your own personal style. 

Kill Paris: “I started playing guitar about 10 years ago. Played in rock, metal, country, and indie bands. I’d say I’ve defined my style by making very emotion driven songs. I always keep it sexy.”  

Zander Albright asks: In terms of your process, do you have any unique or unusual rituals you like engage in before you get in the studio to produce or get on stage to preform?

Kill Paris: “Lots of stretches. Staying limber and healthy is extremely important, especially when traveling non stop. I try to spend as much time on my earthing mat as possible. Before shows I like to just think positive things.”

Donna Taylor asks: You do so many great remixes with love songs. Are you drawn to those for a particular reason?

Kill Paris: “Love is all you need.”

Cam Zăgan asks: What artists influenced you the most when developing your style, and in general?

Kill Paris: “Al Green, Bjork, Alex Metric, soooooo many artists. I really get inspired by artists who thrive to stay unique and really do their own thing. It’s so easy to get caught up in the mediocrity in music today, i like hearing and seeing artists take chances.”  

Do LaB: What can fans look forward to on Friday’s show? Also what are your thoughts on sharing the stage with Crywolf and niceFingers? 

Kill Paris: “I imagine it will be a great night! It’s going to be fun to share the stage with these cats. Should be a funky sexy night.”

He’s had chart hits, gold discs and awards & nominations for his work; he has released 12 solo albums, has more than 250 productions and 90 remixes to his name and his tracks feature on more than 120 compilations… There is however no resting on laurels for this London-based, international bass man.

TRILL MURRAY

TRiLL MURRAY is arguably one of the hottest up-and-coming producers on the scene. He combines the authentic trance synths and foghorns used so widely in dubstep with the half-step crunkification of South American rap music. Churning out intricate ethereal melodies polished, conceived and intelligent. TRiLL is on his way to becoming a household name. While his true identity remains a mystery to the public it is obvious that this young producer has been experienced in making music and has found a niche creating original catchy music for the masses. TRiLL likes to think of his music as a Sexual Journey through space filled with heart churning 808s and epic melodies that can only be described as “True and Real.” TRiLLs name is derived from the musical term “Trill” which is described as a quaver, warble, or shake, a rapid succession of sounds, and his fascination and idolization for actor Bill Murray. Although instead of keeping it comical he keeps it real and true to form.  While we may not find out his true identity for a while we can always count on TRiLL to keep the music “real” and “true” to form.  Be on the lookout as he marks his way as a serious contender in today’s EDM/Hip-Hop world.

Alexander D.C.D. Smith was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, September 16, 1984, and moved to Los Angeles at the age of three. Smith’s work explores the tension between opposites: dark and bright, glossy and matte, precision and spontaneity, structure and freedom. His work is inspired by urban and Asian cultures, typography, early cartoons, sports history, entertainment design, motor sports, and manufacturing techniques.

Do LaB: Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. Let’s start by having you tell us about your new album and the new live tour. 

Mochipet: “The new Live show is an ever expanding project I started working on this year. I basically got tired of doing the Ableton Live / DJ thing that’s become so prevalent today so I started incorporating more instruments, visual projections, and other secret gadgets to my set. With Music as the basis I’m trying more avenues for my creativity. Because it’s a ever changing project, every show / tour will be different. I hope to incorporate the interactive portion into the show later this year which I am very excited about.”

Do LaB: What was your inspiration for the new album? How do you think it fits into your catalog of tunes? 

Mochipet: “‘Rawr Means I Love You’ is a series of songs I wrote the past year and a half on tour. It encompasses many genres and styles. It’s almost like a compilation but I spent a good amount of time making sure it was cohesive and not just a bunch of songs lumped together. You can check it out here: http://bit.ly/rawr_out“

Do LaB: What is the live show like? We’ve seen some video and photos of the new dinosaur heads and lighting rig. 

Mochipet: “For this tour we are doing songs from “Bunnies and Muffins,” “Rawr Means I Love You,” and several new unreleased tunes. We incorporated several different projection mapped shapes and custom visuals for each of the songs. I also have a drummer alone side many instruments I’m playing myself including a Malletkat, Guitar, and Kitara. And yes, of course there is some Godzilla in the mix as always.”
 
Do LaB: What is the main difference for you as performer from a live show vs a solo show? 

Mochipet: “There is a ton more production that goes into the live show then a solo live PA set. I’m am singing and playing a lot of the instruments live so it will be different at every show. It is all original material and there will be no DJing involved.”

Do LaB: How did you link up with Zoogma? 

Mochipet: “I first heard about Zoogma when I was on tour opening for STS9 in Oxford Mississippi. Since then, we managed to link up and do a SE tour together earlier this year. Now they are coming to open up for me on their first West Coast Tour. I’m very excited for them.”
 
Do LaB: What can fans look forward to at our two upcoming shows in San Diego and Los Angeles? 

Mochipet: “Lots of Pets.”

Will asked: “If electronic music didn’t exist, what other outlet would you utilize to affect the masses?”

Mochipet: “I would probably find someway to use my last name ‘Wang.’”

Mochipet: “From my Grandmother in Taiwan. She use to tell me to make “Mochipet’s” to shut me up.”

ASTRONAUTICA

21-year-old Los Angeles native Edrina K. Martinez is Astronautica, one of Alpha Pup Records’ newest artists. Bringing a unique style of lush electronica and a playful sense of exploration to the label, the young producer is a fresh face to the thriving local beat scene. Learning to play guitar by ear at an early age, Astronautica soon began mixing her own samples and beats. After early encouragement by Daedelus and a chance encounter with Shlohmo in San Francisco, the amateur producer was drawn into the musical community and moved quickly from Garage Band to Ableton Live. Quickly becoming addicted to the burgeoning beat sounds of the West Coast, Astronautica is now a full-fledge member of the movement. Her debut release on Alpha Pup Records is the dreamy LP Replay Last Night, a soothing instrumental album that glows warmly with intricate beats and a soulful sensibility.

“My interest in anything art related was sparked when I discovered graffiti at the age of 13. I didn’t realize at the time that this interest would eventually lead me into a life dedicated to creating art. I never went to art school, besides a couple of drawing classes at the local community college. I’ve been painting for about 4 years now, still learning with everything new I do. I do not consider myself an artist I guess, not yet anyway. I work two part time jobs at retail stores in Ventura, my free time is spent surfing, making art, and partying with my friends.” – Evan Mendleson
