Normally associated with his peers in techno from Detroit, Europe and elsewhere, John Tejada has embraced electronic music as a personal frontier, expanding on his resume as a techno recording artist as producer, remixer, DJ, and label owner. Known for crafting a brand of subtle, musical techno, his recorded output ranges across tempo and genre lines, from chilled out affairs with spacious arrangements to pulsating, densely layered, deeply energetic tracks that work magnificently in the hands of DJs as well as on the home stereo.

Much like the layer of congealed fat settling on the top of Momʼs Gefilte Fish, Ron Levy and Jesse Wright formed a deliciously disgusting DJ duo known as idiot Savant. The duo devised Pocket Underground in 2004 as an outlet for the Matzoh balls that were rattling around in their chicken broth. Ron has been playing and making music since he was knee-high to a duck and Jesse just does it for the free drink tickets. Both feel equally at home with their alkaline goggles on as they do their Burberry Banana Hammocks. Their music can best be described as organic, psychedelic, sexy and completely Kosher… Glatt Kosher…

Markie B.’s first exposure to the San Francisco music scene was at a Pink Mammoth event in early 2004 whereby he quickly became one of Pink Mammoth’s first “groupies.” Over the years, he has stuck with Pink Mammoth through ups and downs and now considers the collective his family. As rhythm was the first attraction, Mark has drawn from his home town love for New Orleans funk and has developed a refined taste for house music.

Throbbing bass and thudding beats are the signatures of this project from drummers Michael Travis and Jason Hann. Born out of their shared love of electronic dance music, EOTO’s M.O. is to take the free-wheeling party vibe of a DJ set to the next level by using organic instruments, innovative performance technology, and uncharted musical exploration. Live drums, guitars, and keys, and vocals are mixed, remixed, and sampled on the fly using cutting-edge programs. This is all done without a script, and without a net.

A classically trained pianist and master of the art of software production, Bluetech’s love of melody and his exquisite sense of sound design makes him one of the most ingenious producers today.
Radhika Hersey grew up in the artist counter culture of Los Angeles. Inspired by her dreams, relationships, spirituality, and travel abroad, she has explored many different aspects of the human psyche in her work. From the depths of the subconscious mind to the infinite and divine, her art speaks to the human experience. Upon graduating with a BFA at California College of the Arts she immersed herself completely in her art, studying with several master painters and showing in numerous galleries. In service to the artist community she has helped organized live painting for several events, including the Do Art Foundation and Lightning in a Paint Can. As assistant curator and events coordinator, Radhika helped run L.A.’s first visionary art gallery, Temple of Visions, bridging the gap between the international visionary art culture and L.A.’s local art scene. Her participation in 16 years of Burning Man projects has inspired her to share her experiences and knowledge by teaching art to children. She is currently a resident artist at The Hive Gallery in Downtown L.A.

Learn more about Herakut and get the details on their upcoming show with Lucent Dossier Experience inside!

Words by: DukeDuRock

To say that we’re excited would be a massive understatement when it comes to seeing what will transpire on-stage at The Palace Theater when visual virtuosos Lucent Dossier Experience bring to life the curious creatures of acclaimed German street art duo Herakut for a very special two-night, live art showcase, aptly entitled, “When Lucent Found Herakut.”

During our recent interview with Lucent Dossier Founder, Dream Rockwell, she called this up-coming show the “next evolution” of the performance art troupe and now Jasmin Siddiqui (AKA: Hera) of Herakut shares what this “dream pairing” has been like for her and longtime production partner Falk Lehman (AKA: Akut).

“It feels like it’s meant to be in a way,” explained Siddiqui during a break from the extensive rehearsals that are currently underway in preparation for the performances at The Palace Theater. “When I saw the dancers move during their rehearsals in the Lucent warehouse, they reminded me of all these sketches of Herakut characters we’ve done over the years.”

“We’re all playing together,” Siddiqui added. “Each one of the Lucent dancers are performing as a different Herakut character. It feels as though we have known them for awhile because we’ve been painting them on walls or canvases for so long. And now it’s like we finally get to meet them.”

When it came to bringing their characters to life, Siddiqui and Lehman knew that Lucent Dossier would be the perfect collaborators after being introduced to Rockwell by The Do ArT Foundation’s Executive Director, Carmen Zella, when Herakut last came to Los Angeles to paint a wall-size mural at The Do LaB’s downtown studio, Big Art Labs.

“As artists we pretty much come from the same space and when it comes to the creative process, they are all so driven,” Siddiqui shared of working with the Lucent Dossier Experience. “These are not your ordinary dance company dancers. They learn so much more than mere choreography, as they actually become the persona and perfectly embody our creatures. For us, it’s so much more interesting because we can talk to them as if they were our Herakut characters that we’ve grown to love so much.

She added, “When we talk and design things together it’s really on the same level. We finally found people who are not only able to envision big things but are actually able to do them. It’s a good mix between experience and creative freedom.”

For longtime followers of Herakut, these up-coming shows at The Palace Theater will offer fans the chance to see their beloved characters come to life in a way they never thought possible at one of Los Angeles’ most historic venues.

“The Palace Theater feels like home,” Siddiqui said of the show’s setting. “I walked in and instantly fell in love. This is my idea of an ideal place to put on a show like this. It’s even better than a brand-new theater because the old and historic elements of the Palace Theater, that’s what we go for. If we could have chosen any place in L.A. to do this, we would have chosen this spot.

“Everyone who’s into our style will love this,” Siddiqui added. “We make sure that all the images we put on are fantasy and will allow the audience to able to tap into their childhood. When you see the Lucent dancers, they have this innocent touch to them. When they dance it’s playful. It can be sexy too, but there’s always an innocence to what they do and that really lends itself well with our style. We really couldn’t have picked better partners for this project.”

Click image for higher resolution version.

As with the work of both Herkaut and Lucent Dossier Experience, no two shows are ever the same and each night at The Palace Theater will offer the audience different interactive and spontaneous performances.

“I keep getting asked what’s the best night for people to come on,” Siddiqui shared with a laugh. “I don’t know because for us it’s always very exciting to see the start as you’re creating something out of nothing and then again, the second night when we’re finishing the pieces, it will be very interesting too. My recommendation is to come both nights and join us.”

“We’re not putting on the same show as we don’t want to paint the same stuff over and over,” added Siddiqui. “We want to challenge ourselves and let something grow and come to life. This is going to be a great month for us and we’re really excited to see what happens.

Just Announced: As if this performance couldn’t get any better, An-Ten-Nae and DJ Laura’s bass music project, LowRIDERz, will be keeping the party going strong immediately following the show on Friday night with their signature speaker-shaking sounds!

The incomparable artwork of Andrew “Android” Jones has become an integral part of our Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) Festival over the years. The innovative artist has fully embraced the “family” aspect of the event by collaborating with not only The Do LaB, but also many of his fellow performers at the festival, such as his now next-door-neighbor Random Rab, whom Jones most recently worked with on creating the stunning album artwork for Rab’s latest longplayer, “Visurreal.” At LIB 2011, Jones unveiled his mind-blowing series entitled, “Night Rainbow,” which entranced festival-goers with its eye-popping use of colors and Jones’s notoriously intricate details than run rampant throughout each piece.

“I’ve been making art at LIB since 2007 and every year there is more to draw upon,” shared Jones during a break from his recent “Night Rainbow” showcase in London. “The art is cool and the music is great, but what drives me is seeing and being around so many people that I love all at once. When you are surrounded by other artists who are operating at high potentials and giving it their best, it naturally elevates everyone’s ability to create. I remember when LIB was a small intimate gathering in the woods. It was truly romantic. I fell in love with all of the people back then and every year it only evolves and grows stronger. I make the best art for the people I love and I make my favorite art when I feel that energy in return.

“The ‘Night Rainbow series‘ is an extensive new body of work that I had created during my first independent ‘Digital Art Road Tour,’” Jones added of his latest artistic endeavor. “The Night Rainbow is also the name of my mobile digital art studio which is a converted decommissioned military box truck. I equipped it with an electrical generator, a sound system and several high-powered projectors. The Night Rainbow helped support a caravan of renegade underground digital artists that made up my crew. We traveled along the west coast where LIB was our first tour stop. We set up a live digital art/sound stage as well as installations at each venue, which was where I worked on adding to one continuous work of art throughout the entire trip. So ‘The Night Rainbow series’ is the collective body of work from this tour and it may be viewed as an integral whole or as individual pieces.”

Becoming “Android” Jones

The moniker “Android” may serve to be the perfect reflection of Jones’s futuristic style, but the name also acts as a poignant reminder from the artist’s past as well.

“It’s taken on many meanings over the years but a lot of it dates back to the first time I had my mind blown,” Jones shared. “I underwent major brain surgery at eleven years old and without the precision of CAT scans and the technical advances in modern neurosurgery, we would not be having this conversation. I am literally a product of technology as I owe the last 23 years of my life to it. So the half-man, half-machine metaphor became a fitting reminder of my mechanical debt.”

Striking the Fire of Imagination

Jones puts countless hours and expounds endless energy into personalizing each of his pieces. He created the Night Rainbow mobile to specifically serve as his new “home” studio, and now he can embrace his creativity no matter what setting he may find himself in.

“Each work I make is unique and I employ a variety of techniques and creative strategies to create my results,” Jones shared. “Often before I begin I will spend hours collecting and curating a collection of new images, shapes and patterns that may have a particular relevance to my mood, emotions and inspiration. Next is music. I select a playlist that will enhance the emotions that I want to infuse in the work. The tempo and BPM will have a direct effect on my mark making, stroke pressure, or pattern selection. The playlist may possibly be the most influential decision I make.

“I then establish the pixel parameters of my canvas as I stare into the white infinite abyss for a moment to define my place in time and space,” Jones added. “Early strokes are often dynamic and intuitive and the marks become more intentional and specific as the work evolves. The trial and error and chances of the new brushes are exciting for me because it always keeps the art interesting and maintains a sense of wonder that is a crucial component to striking the fire of imagination.”

Creative Process

To achieve the incredibly detailed artwork that he’s become known for, Jones pulls from his artistic upbringing but also embraces technology while feeding off of his strong spirituality.

“I was trained using charcoal, graphite and paintbrushes,” Jones explained. “If you’re painting a still-life or a plaster-cast and time is not an issue, then it is a wonderful practice and discipline to use brushes and pencils. But when I have a dynamic environment with throbbing sound and a landscape of constantly shifting lights, bodies and colors to draw inspiration from, pigment and synthetic animal hair just doesn’t do it for me anymore. It creates a bottleneck from what my mind wants to express through the limitations of what a limited tool set can reproduce.

“I often attempt to view my work and its place in the several thousand year long conversation of art history,” Jones added. “I’m constantly fascinated by the nature of creativity and the mind’s relationship to the definition of shapes and symbols that comprise a framework for meaning. The tools that I harness in my creative process allow me to paint with an endless variety of patterns, shapes and images which I strive to arrange in novel combination until an intentional, or more often than not unintentional, narrative begins to emerge.”

Want to learn more about this innovative artist? Stay tuned for the second part of our interview with Andrew “Android” Jones, where he’ll discuss his creative evolution and up-coming plans for 2012, including Lightning in a Bottle!

Forward is not just a direction, it’s a way of life for Colorado based producer Alex B who is rolling out big tunes under the new guise of Paper Diamond. The new project finds the trusted producer moving into previously untraveled musical territory. The Paper Diamond sound has raw energy and the kind of dramatic anticipation only a seasoned producer can incite. Driving beats and bass grab on tight while deep, rich tones rumble under layers of spacey synthesizers, sweet melodies, and catchy vocals. One thing is for sure. The energy is high.

Christian Bauhofer at first glance comes off as the unassuming dude yawning next to you in class, a kind of lumberjack-nerd fusion in his glasses and scruffy facial hair. However, wait until the sun goes down and add a couple drinks and a whole lot of bass — and quiet, smiley Christian assumes his party-crushing alter-ego: Minnesota.

John Park is an artist and teacher living in Los Angeles. He received his training at the Rhode Island School of Design where he studied classical drawing, painting, sculpture and anatomy. His current series is an attempt at reconciling these classical influences with the more urban aesthetic of the Pop Surrealist movement. The paintings themselves are executed in a live, public setting usually in one evening and then taken back to his studio for further reworking and detail work. He teaches drawing and painting at Concord High School in Santa Monica, has three cats and one Tree.

Ashley Bowers is an artist of many mediums. She graduated from California State University Long Beach in 2009 with a BFA in drawing and painting, but has done everything from painting, to sculpture, to costume design. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles as an artist, a live painter, and a fashion model. A Burner by blood, her father Jim Bowers started going to Burning Man when she was a kid. He encouraged her artistic talents & leadership qualities, & always included her in the construction of his own art & BM grant projects. Her work has been shown in several group shows throughout southern California, but the “Boogaloo” art car project, which debuted at Burning Man 2011, was her biggest project to date. When it comes to her painting, her style and inspiration is constantly evolving. Being a woman of multiple races, and an interesting life’s history, has inspired her to explore the identity of not only herself, but all women. In an effort to combine her passions for art and fashion, she incorporates the use of lace and other textiles into the work and has even sewn these embellishments directly onto the canvas.

Words by: Duke DuRock

The innovative minds that make up the Lucent Dossier Experience have been dazzling audiences across the world with some mind-blowing performances during the seven years since the group’s inception. For founder Dream Rockwell and her performance art collective, they’ve always embraced breaking new creative ground and after re-opening the historic Palace Theater in Downtown Los Angeles last year with a series of well-received and attended shows, the group is now teaming up with internationally renowned artists Herakut, to bring their unique artwork to life during a special two night showcase.

“The way we think is very similar,” Rockwell said of the pairing. “I feel like Herakut creates other worlds. They open up the eye to another dimension where other beings exist on a plane that’s perhaps running parallel to ours. But it’s clearly another world. I feel like in our shows that’s what we’ve always strived to do as well.”

She added, “When I look at their artwork, I’m always thinking, who are these little beings? Where do they live and what do they like? They look so magical and you can really feel all the emotion that is put into each creation. So it’s pretty exciting that we will get to bring the characters of Herakut to life.”

When Lucent Met Herakut

Herakut is the talented German street art duo consisting of Jasmin Siddiqui (AKA Hera) and Falk Lehman (AKA Akut). The idea for this creative collaboration first came about during the painting process of a giant mural that Herakut designed for The Do LaB’s studio at Big Art Labs.

“We were introduced by Carmen Zella (Executive Director for the Do ArT Foundation) who saw the vision and connected us together,” recalled Rockwell. “When I met with Jasmin and Falk, we just started talking and hearing each other’s ideas. It was one of those moments where you come together with someone new and you’re instantly like, ‘Oh yeah, we could do this together, or that together.’ We were just building off of each other’s ideas so effortlessly. So in the end, we all knew we had to do something together because it was so easy.”

“We both had a little piece of the puzzle that the other was interested in,” added Rockwell. “We’ve been very interested in exploring video mapping and different multi-media aspects of performance. We always have live painters in the room while performing at our private events and we’ve always loved that aspect of our show but, we’ve never been able to incorporate the two onto the same stage in a big way before. This is the introduction of all of that because they are producing some video elements for us that will be projected onto the stage and they’ll also be on-stage with us doing live painting throughout the entire performance.”

The Next Evolution of Lucent Dossier Experience

For longtime fans of Lucent Dossier Experience, their collaboration with Herakut promises to be unlike anything they’ve previously seen from the group before. Bringing together all that’s best about the performance troupe and set to a fresh new musical soundtrack composed by the Lucent Dossier Band, along with some exciting collaborations with cutting-edge producers such as Kraddy, the end result will be an engaging 95-minute experience that will feature aerialists, fire, dance and live on-stage art from Herakut. The Palace Theater will also be packed with interactive characters and stations for the audience to enjoy in making this show a truly interactive experience.

“The idea is that the show will start as a blank canvas and the audience will actually see a show in some aspects being built before their eyes,” Rockwell revealed. “Instead of us putting up a totally polished performance, it’s going to organically evolve throughout the evening. So it’s as if the audience was in our little workshop watching us create in sped-up time.”

“We’ve wanted to do something different at The Palace Theater because when you get in there, it asks you to do something epic,” added Rockwell. “You can’t just do any old thing in this building. If you’re going to be performing in here you’ve got to really bring it!”

While Lucent Dossier Experience has performed in places all over the world, from the crazy desert of Burning Man to The Grammy Awards, collaborating with Herkaut has proved to be creatively invigorating and has Rockwell excited for what’s to come.

“This is the next evolution for us,” revealed Rockwell. “I like to throw things up and see what’s next because I’m a super curious person. It’s a dream come true for all of us to go and really explode out into a brand new direction.”

“When Lucent Met Herakut” will be a special two-night only event at The Palace Theater that is not to be missed!
Those in the know have been following Emancipator since he self-released his first album, Soon It Will Be Cold Enough, at the age of 19 in 2006. His agile melodies layered over headnodic, immaculately-produced beats captivated fans across the internet and across the world. His latest album “Safe In The Steep Cliffs” blends new instrumentation and organic samples with the signature Emancipator style of clean production, silky melodies and addictive drums.

Beat-driven but given to richly textured sound design, rhythmically fractured but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s music is a bridge between the past and present, bringing the artist face to face with a creative legacy that spans decades. The upcoming 2012 release, Lineage—a mini-LP of sorts that has a complex constellation of sounds and ideas that we have come to expect from the producer/drummer. However, his compositional focus and restraint grounds songs that are otherwise cosmically inclined. Never has he demonstrated such complete command of his material.

MARLEY CARROLL

Marley Carroll is a prodigious multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ from Asheville, North Carolina. The beginnings of his musicianship sprang from training in piano, percussion and scratch DJ technique. His debut album, Melanaster is the result of meticulous bedroom alchemy, sounding like a lost Radiohead LP submerged in ten feet of salt water. Marley created Melanaster entirely on his own. The album’s touchstones are found in the space between the beautiful haze of early Nineties shoegaze rock (My Bloody Valentine) and early 2000’s IDM (Autechre, Squarepusher). The result is smeared, melancholy pop songs tethered to abstract electronic rhythms, what NPR called “gorgeously subdued glitch-pop”.

Ceci Castelblanco explores inherent relativity and connectivity of life in her work. Her process involves continually engaging in systems of line work and then transcending from them, organically responding to how images are growing. Revealing these very lines, Ceci’s work takes on a life of its own as the images literally grow and breathe.
