Who could have thought that when 2016 started with all that excitement and vigor that it would have turned out the way that it did? We achieved more than ever before but with the tragic passing of greats like Prince, David Bowie, Phife Dawg, Leonard Cohen and Alan Rickman a shadow still seems to loom over the entertainment world. Indeed, it’s almost like we’ve already paid the toll for 2017 to be packed full of the best moments in human history. For many, New Years is a time to look back on what’s been achieved and to ponder next steps. Some don’t even look back. Like climbing a flight of stairs, some just put one foot in front of the next till they reach the top.
Complicating choices of where to go this New Years, the untimely and dreadful losses at Ghost Ship earlier this month sent ripples across the local and underground events scene. That’s why it’s more important than ever for each of us to bring those who represent good examples of legitimacy and safety into the light. Whatever your feelings about the start of the new year, chances are this is an occasion that calls for a little celebration – but with so many NYE events coming up on the calendar (especially given the existing climate of uncertainty for the underground) where’s a reveler to go? It’s a common dilemma this time of year, so to aid you in finding the perfect party to kickstart the 2017 of your dreams, we’ve collected information on twelve of the top New Year’s celebrations in the state of California.
– Los Angeles –
There are parties and then there are majestic moments in music induced euphoria with 3 stages spanning more than twelve hours. If you’re looking to maximize your music experience no need to look further than Minimal Effort on New Year’s Eve. Each of the headliners slated for their Downtown Los Angeles New Year’s event have appeared at one time or another on the Woogie Stage at Lightning in a Bottle so you can bet that the evening will be chock-full of the best house and techno tunes in the city.
Drum and Bass enthusiasts will descend upon the Union with quick rhythms, pulsating bass and enough enthusiasm to crack Fraggle Rock. With several headliners fresh from the UK, you may want to doubleknot your shoelaces because when you get an earful of these beats from across the pond there’s always a chance you’ll get your socks knocked clean off.
With superlative beats taking the night clear to 8am the next day, TropiKroma promises to be one of the best New Year’s experiences a couple can find. Whether you’re looking for a special spot for that midnight kiss or you want to rage through to sunrise and beyond, the good folks at Terrakroma and Tropical have you covered. In addition to some epic moontribe vibes, TropiKroma might be the perfect place to meet all your friends.
Residents of Santa Monica know how to party but there’s no way they’re ready for the dance fever Beyond Samsara is set to deliver. LIB staples Henry Pope, Fleetwood Smack and divaDanielle will be dishing out beats and the crew members from Camp Charlie are poised to keep that momentum going well into the morning. With three rooms of sound and a massive outdoor space to shoot the breeze, wanderers are all but certain to stumble into conversational splendor throughout a night of cosmic tunes.
When tandem teams set out to change the world through the power of music people across the LA cityscape tend to take note, and we’re no exception. Noise Revolt and White Cube Society have been blazing their own trails separately for quite a while but last year this super duo left the whole town talking for months about what an incredible party they put together to bring in 2016. For this, their second New Year’s Eve event, we’re expecting more sonic delights with a few flavorful twists. Strap yourself in for a cosmic joyride like nothing else, courtesy of Shigeto, Lord Raja, Davoid, Britton, Raskal, Chief Jesta, Euth, Yuto, Camilo and the sensationally mysterious Late Night Secret.
Just the thought of a Lee Burridge New Year’s Celebration is enough to conjure flights of fancy but this is one party that delivers exactly that and more! For anyone in search of minimal and psychedelic techno sounds this is one party that guarantees the prestige of a sound that’s global with the taste fresh from the underground.
Get 2017 started off with a fresh meal and a tasty beverage first thing in the morning on January 1st at Studio 11 in Los Angeles. Along with something delicious to eat, patrons will enjoy Fort Knox Five and JPOD, who will be accompanied by local sensations Liquorbox, Ben Annand and DaVoid. If you’re looking to bring in the New Year cuttin’ a rug on the dancefloor you won’t want to miss funk favorites from the Dirty Beetles, including EVeryman, Bruche and Oh Diggz. Those in the know will tell you: this is the afterparty you want to get to early.
– Bay Area –
The good folks at Enchanted Forest Gathering sure know how to bring out the animal in us and if you’re looking to unleash your wild side this is your Northern California New Year’s Eve destination. This party is extra special because it’s essentially a mini-festival with all the saucy fun you might expect from a large scale event. Artisanal vendors, visionary live painting and a number of majestic costumed creatures are expected to be paired with an already stacked lineup. If face melting bass is your bliss, this is where you’ll be to bring in the New Year.
The scintillating gathering being assembled in this Bay area mansion party is expected to have multiple rooms, art galleries, interactive performers and a host of curiousities to stir up magic throughout the night. Dirtybird label legend Worthy, Opulent Temple’s Syd Gris and Ben Seagren from Distrikt are just a few of the heavy hitters bringing refreshing beats to the Mint.
The stealth partythrowers at HushConcerts and the exquisite production experts at Epic are teaming up to bring the Bay performances by Dirtybird Records icon Kill Frenzy and the shazam mastering Klingande, who will be joined by Arnold Sax Live to take it up a notch. Add Viceroy to the mix and it’s no wonder this party has been recognized by VICE and Rolling Stone as one of the countries best New Years Parties. Those who opt for the Eye Heart experience come New Years will enjoy world class sound, imaginative art installations and easy evening with unparalleled service. Event organizers are also serving up a taste of the future with a VR playground, courtesy of Upload VR.
Bonobo Alert! Brace for an adventure in audio elysium with Bonobo and Nickodemus. The pair are set to start early at 9pm making the Midway a solid first stop for the party-hoppers of the evening. Whether you plan to indulge in some hardly decent dancing or you want to get a good pregame in before the night comes alive, there can be little doubt that Bonobo knows how to party.
From fashion vendors and photobooths to food trucks galore, the people at Pink Mammoth are truly taking over-the-top to a whole new level. Fasten a chin strap before reading this lineup too or be prepared to collect your jaw when it hits the floor. Along with Doc Martin, Idjut Boys, Recondite and Justin Martin (just for a few) this event offers the special benefit of not conflicting with most of your other New Year’s plans. In other words, this event starts on New Years Day, so what it doesn’t offer in a midnight countdown it more than makes up for with the boom.
Courtesy of our friends at Music is 4 Lovers, Favela Bar, Sundown and Soul Work we’ve got a bonus event too. If you happen to find yourself in the San Diego area for the countdown check out the Lovelife Weekender: NYE Ball and NYD Pool Party. As a one-stop-shop for dancefloor bliss these beautiful people will be serving up beats in three rooms with sonic juggernauts like Lee Curtiss, Monkey Safari, Tim Green, &ME and several more. If you’re in SD, this is the place to be on NYE.
