Meet Do LaB's Build Team Lead

Whether it’s Lightning in a Bottle, Coachella or one of our other festivals, some builders are so genuinely talented and badass to be around that we’ve kept them with us since the beginning. In Derek Welsh, you’d find just such a person. In fact, it’s because of the often unseen work from Derek and others like him year after year, that the iconic landscapes at Do LaB events have grown to become the source of life-changing inspiration that they are today. As a well-loved fixture in our Do LaB fam and our Build Team Lead, he has a hand in just about every psychedelic structure we’ve put together. But his contributions don’t stop there. When we’re all covered in dirt and sweat, but there’s still a lot of work to do to get the job done, Derek is the one that stokes the fire in each of us with a tireless work ethic and a confidence-inspiring candor that just won’t quit.

As a leader at Do LaB for more than a decade, his clever combination of trademark tough love with a happy-to-help disposition has been an essential part of our own growth. Also, with his combined technical capability and spirited fortitude –  along with a relentless dedication to the success of his crew – Derek represents a celebrated keystone in the architecture of team culture at Do LaB today.

What’s a topic you’re currently intrigued by or passionate about?

Keeping in shape, so that I can make the most of the time I spend with my new family!

Why is that topic important to you?

I’ve been away in Thailand waiting for the love of my life, Vika and her amazing daughter Lisa, to receive their visas so that we can return to Los Angeles together as a family for the first time. Of course, this also means I have not been able to work onsite as much as usual, so to stay in Body by Do LaB shape I have been going to the gym every morning to do cardio and a bit of weight lifting. For me, it’s important to stay in good physical condition so that I can stay in shape for the very physical job that I do and now I have a family so there is more motivation than ever to take care of me so that I can do more for them. Plus, it feels good to know I’m taking care of my body, mind and soul by spending a little time each day to build a better me.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned from festivals?

I feel like the biggest thing I’ve learn over the years of attending and throwing festivals is how important community is to me! I couldn’t do what I do without the support, encouragement and love from my friends and family. Which, lucky enough for me, is the amazing community of people I am constantly surrounded by.

What artist would you leave on repeat the whole way home?

Definitely SBTRKT! Here’s the video “New Dorp, New York“!
