Health & Safety

Take a second to read through the health and safety section below to ensure you have a safe, healthy and memorable LIB experience.

Attendee Safety

Attendee security and safety are our top priority. We work hand and hand with local law enforcement, Kern County Public Health, Kern County Fire Department, Hall Ambulance as well as our own security, medical and harm reduction teams to help ensure the safety of our events

Link Up!

It’s easy to accidentally get separated from your group at any festival, so before you even get to LIB be sure to set meeting points on the map with your friends so it’s easier to stick together. Once you arrive and set up camp, find nearby landmarks like flags that will help you navigate back to camp later. It’s also helpful to set up a general meet-up point at each stage within the festival grounds.

Medical Staff

At LIB we have a robust team of medical practitioners ready to care for those who need it. Medical Staff will be dressed in red or black LIB Medical t-shirts.  You can find Medical & Harm Reduction services at multiple onsite locations or ask anyone with a radio to call Medical for you. Medical Booth locations will be identified on the festival map .

Event Staff Security

Event Staff Security will be dressed in Black or Yellow.  Event security will be located at the perimeter of the festival, as well as throughout the event space, stages and in the campgrounds.  Security is instructed to limit physical access in designated areas as well as intervene in scenarios where physical and emotional harm are perceived.

Rangers

Our Rangers are guardians of the shared values of the LIB community. They can be found dressed in khaki roaming the grounds in pairs to address safety concerns, mediate disputes, and resolve conflicts. You can always stop an LIB Ranger if you have any questions or issues or need to get help.

The Sanctuary

If you’re experiencing difficulties, whether drug-related or not, you can visit the Sanctuary next to the main medical tent. Peer-counselors and volunteers will help provide a safe space until you are ready to rejoin the festival.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Drink water. It’s the most important thing you can do for yourself during the event, which is why we have always had FREE WATER at LIB. Dehydration can sneak up on you so be sure to drink water regularly throughout the day. Bring your refillable water bottle to one of our Water Stations to quench your thirst! Water Stations are located throughout the festival grounds and at every Camp Plaza. Just look for the blue 💧 on the horizon.

We also encourage attendees to bring their own water to the festival as well.  The best way is to bring 2 gallon or 5 gallon jugs and keep them in your camp so you can always fill up.

Climate

The heat and dust are a natural part of the Buena Vista Lake environment.  Average temperatures at this time of year are in the high 80’s, but temperatures can exceed 100 degrees and it is not uncommon for there to be high wind and dust storms.  The evenings can also get quite cold.  Here are some things you should be equipped with to keep yourself safe from the elements;

  • Face Coverings; scarf, mask, bandana (masks work best!)

  • Goggles or Sunglasses

  • Hats and clothing that protect your skin from the rays

  • Umbrellas or shade structures

  • Sunscreen and personal cooling products (cooling towels, battery operated or hand held fans

  • Bring layers for night time as the temperatures drop significantly at night

  • …and again, most importantly, water to HYDRATE!!

See Something; Say Something

We’re all part of the LIB family, so let’s be sure to take care of each other.

  • Flag down any staff member or Public Safety official if you see something that doesn't seem quite right.

  • If you suspect that someone is suffering from a medical issue or potential drug overdose, seek immediate attention at one of the clearly marked medical stations, or find an event staff member with a radio.

  • Event Staff Security will be dressed in Black or Yellow, Medical Staff will be dressed in Red or black, Rangers will be dressed in Khaki.  Attendee safety is of the utmost importance to us. Even if you are unsure about an incident, please report it – it is better to be safe than sorry. There are no repercussions for drawing attention to an incident.  We are not looking to place blame or cause trouble for anyone reporting a potentially dangerous situation, so please don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.

In Event of an Emergency

In the event of an emergency, please be on alert. Information may be relayed through the following;

  • On the video screens

  • Over the audio system

  • Through mobile notifications

It Starts with Self Care

LIB can be an exhilarating and unforgettable experience, but can also be an overwhelming and an emotional one at that. It is important for you to always check in with yourself during the festival to make sure you are practicing self-care.

  • Drink plenty of water. Hydration is super important!

  • Know your limits and give yourself time to recover and regroup

  • Rest. We know you don’t want to miss a minute of LIB, but give yourself time to sleep and reset.

  • Eat. Your body needs fuel if you're going to be on the dance floor all night!

Be Prepared:  Dress for the Terrain

We’ve seen all types of weather at LIB, so plan your fashions accordingly with heat, cold, dust, rain, and wind in mind.

  • Lightweight or breathable clothing fare best

    • If you choose to wear lots of fabrics and furs, be sure to drink plenty of water

    • Wear layers

  • Hats and clothing that protect your skin from the rays

  • Footwear should be comfortable and closed-toe. Wear sandals and flip flops at your own risk.
